Collective intelligence: aggregation of information from neighbors in a guessing game

Complex systems show the capacity to aggregate information and to display coordinated activity. In the case of social systems the interaction of different individuals leads to the emergence of norms, trends in political positions, opinions, cultural traits, and even scientific progress. Examples of collective behavior can be observed in activities like the Wikipedia and Linux, where individuals aggregate their knowledge for the benefit of the community, and citizen science, where the potential of collectives to solve complex problems is exploited. Here, we conducted an online experiment to investigate the performance of a collective when solving a guessing problem in which each actor is endowed with partial information and placed as the nodes of an interaction network. We measure the performance of the collective in terms of the temporal evolution of the accuracy, finding no statistical difference in the performance for two classes of networks, regular lattices and random networks. We also determine that a Bayesian description captures the behavior pattern the individuals follow in aggregating information from neighbors to make decisions. In comparison with other simple decision models, the strategy followed by the players reveals a suboptimal performance of the collective. Our contribution provides the basis for the micro-macro connection between individual based descriptions and collective phenomena.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

Competition in the presence of aging: order, disorder, and synchronized collective behavior

We study the stochastic dynamics of coupled states with transition probabilities depending on local persistence, this is, the time since a state has changed. When the population has a preference to adopt older states the system orders quickly due to the dominance of the old state. When preference for new states prevails, the system can show coexistence of states or synchronized collective behavior resulting in long ordering times. In this case, the magnetization $m(t)$ of the system oscillates around $m(t)=0$. Implications for social systems are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, lette

Analysing Human Mobility Patterns of Hiking Activities through Complex Network Theory

The exploitation of high volume of geolocalized data from social sport tracking applications of outdoor activities can be useful for natural resource planning and to understand the human mobility patterns during leisure activities. This geolocalized data represents the selection of hike activities according to subjective and objective factors such as personal goals, personal abilities, trail conditions or weather conditions. In our approach, human mobility patterns are analysed from trajectories which are generated by hikers. We propose the generation of the trail network identifying special points in the overlap of trajectories. Trail crossings and trailheads define our network and shape topological features. We analyse the trail network of Balearic Islands, as a case of study, using complex weighted network theory. The analysis is divided into the four seasons of the year to observe the impact of weather conditions on the network topology. The number of visited places does not decrease despite the large difference in the number of samples of the two seasons with larger and lower activity. It is in summer season where it is produced the most significant variation in the frequency and localization of activities from inland regions to coastal areas. Finally, we compare our model with other related studies where the network possesses a different purpose. Norm inequalities for weighted Dirichlet spaces with applications to conformal maps

A variety of norm inequalities related to Bergman and Dirichlet spaces induced by radial weights are considered. Some of the results obtained can be considered as generalizations of certain known special cases while most of the estimates discovered are completely new. The second objective of the paper is to apply the obtained norm inequalities to relate the growth of the maximum modulus of a conformal map $f$, measured in terms of a weighted integrability condition, to a geometric quantity involving the area of image under $f$ of a disc centered at the origin. Our findings in this direction yield new geometric characterizations of conformal maps in certain weighted Dirichlet and Besov spaces.Comment: 30 page

Los Chinches de los cereales en Cataluña (Insecta, Heteroptera): algunos aspectos de su biología

Les xinxes dels cereals (Aelia sp., Eurygaster sp.) presents a Catalunya poden esdevenir plaga. La nostra investigació de camp pretenia establir les espècies presents, la seva fenologia i preferències pel que fa a la varietat de blat, la zona del camp i les seves característiques. S'estudiaren vuit camps de blat tou (Triticum aestivum) als Prats del Rei (Anoia) entre el març de 2003 i el juliol de 2004. Mensualment, es feren transsectes amb l'ajut de la mànega entomològica o per observació directa. Es confirmà la presència d'A. acuminata, A. rostrata, E. maura i E. austriaca, univoltines. Hibernen com a adults, possiblement en estat quiescent. Les varietats de blat preferides foren Isengrain i Soissons. Aelia sp. se situa a la perifèria del camp de conreu, mentre que Eurygaster sp. n'ocupa el centre. Els marges externs orientats al nord o a l'est són els més poblats per les xinxes dels cereals.Las chinches de los cereales (Aelia sp., Eurygaster sp.) presentes en Cataluña pueden convertirse en plaga. Hibernan como adultos, posiblemente en quiescencia. Las variedades de trigo preferidas fueron Isengrain y Soissons. Aelia sp. se sitúa en la periferia del campo de cultivo, mientras que Eurygaster sp. ocupa el centro del mismo. Our field research tried to know the species, their phenology, and preferences with respect to the variety of wheat, zone of the field and characteristics of it. The research was conducted in eight fields of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum) in Els Prats del Rei (Anoia) between March 2003 and July 2004. Transects were performed monthly, collecting by means of a sweeping net or by direct observation. The presence of the univoltine species A.acuminata, A rostrata, E. austriaca and E. maura, was confirmed. They hibernate as adults, possibly in quiescente state. The favourite varieties of wheat were Isengrain and Soissons. Aelia prefers the periphery of the field, whereas Eurygaster is located in the center of it. The adjacent margins oriented to north or east are the most populated by sunn pests

Electrificació d’una casa de colònies aïllada

L’objectiu del present projecte és el d’exposar davant els Organismes Competents que la instal·lació elèctrica, reuneix les condicions i garanties mínimes exigides per la reglamentació vigent, per poder legalitzar-la i procedir a la seva posterior obertura i posada en funcionament. Tot i no ser part del projecte, també s’ha realitzat una descripció de les instal·lacions de climatització i protecció contra incendis, també per a la seva posterior obertura i posada en funcionament. Per últim, també s’ha realitzat una revisió i possible ampliació d’alguna part de la instal·lació d’aigua sanitària i gas, però sense incloure-ho amb detall al pressupost del projecte. Les instal·lacions esmentades es realitzaran a una casa de colònies situada a Castellar de N’Hug. Aquesta casa de colònies es troba relativament a prop del poble però aïllada del subministrament a baixa tensió de la zona. Així doncs, es realitzarà el subministrament a alta tensió a través d’una línia de mitja tensió subterrània que unirà la línia d’alta tensió esmentada amb un centre de mesura subterrani ja existent dintre del recinte de la casa de colònies. A partir d’aquest centre de mesura es realitzarà el subministrament a tota la casa de colònies, formada per un edifici principal, l’edifici de serveis, d’una granja petita, un camp de bàsquet, una sala de festes exterior i l’enllumenat exterior que il·lumina tot el recinte. Es realitzarà un subministrament alternatiu en cas de fallada de la línia de mitja tensió a projectar. Consistirà en la instal·lació d’un Grup Electrogen format per un motor dièsel que serà capaç de subministrar al 100% la demanda elèctrica de tot el recinte que conforma la casa de colònies aïllada. El grup electrogen s’alimentarà amb fuel-oil, que està acumulat dintre d’un dipòsit situat a la zona nord de l’exterior dels edificis. També es realitzarà la instal·lació de dos acumuladors d’aigua a gas, per abastir a tot el recinte que forma part de la casa de colònies. Aquests acumuladors s’alimenten amb gas butà, que està acumulat dintre d’un dipòsit situat també a la zona nord de l’exterior dels edificis. El Grup electrogen i les calderes ja esmentades, es situaran en un mòdul prefabricat exterior situat sobre el centre de mesura subterrani

The constructive role of diversity in the global response of coupled neuron systems

We study the effect that the heterogeneity present among the elements of an ensemble of coupled excitable neurons has on the collective response of the system to an external signal. We consider two different interaction scenarios, one in which the neurons are diffusively coupled and another in which the neurons interact via pulse-like signals. We find that the type of interaction between the neurons has a crucial role in determining the response of the system to the external modulation. We develop a mean-field theory based on an order parameter expansion that quantitatively reproduces the numerical results in the case of diffusive coupling.We acknowledge financial support from the following organizations: National Science Foundation (grant DMR- 0702890); G.
